A black hole is a collection of matter so massive that its escape velocity is greater than the speed of light, hence nothing, not even light, can escape from it. Since no light can escape it would appear black, like a black hole in space. It does not suck things in, but its gravity is so great that things have a strong tendency to fall in to it. In fact the rush of infalling matter around a black hole is so great that a great deal of energy is released in the form of very high energy radiation. While you cannot see the black hole itself, you can see the radiation, and that's how black holes are found. Many, perhaps most, black holes are formed when a star explodes as a supernova. There are also supermassive black holes at the center of probably all galaxies.
