My transmission is shot. It's an automatic in my 81 Chevy Camaro. Car came stock w/ a v6 so I know its the wimpy transmission. TH-250 maybe? Anyways, I took it to the transmission shop and they said my clutch pack is going out. I'm about to put in a rebuilt 350ci engine. Should i leave the transmission? Get it repaired? Buy a new one? Where could i buy a new one? I am on a college student budget. Thanks
Upgrading engine and transmission is hardly affordable on a college student budget. BUT.a 350 engine in that year model should be compatible with that year model which will mean a complete engine ECU and harness swap out. Are you up for that? Then there are the same considerations on the trans too. The THM 250C is a good transmission and should be abler to have a local trans shop do a bench rebuild and new torque converter for $750. I advise caution in wanting to upgrade the Camaro. Keep it stock, you will spend more time driving it rather than excessive time repairing upgrades.
ask the tranny shop you took it to to see if they have a 700r4 for a 350 that you could trade and pay the difference for. cause the bell housing on the tranny is different for the v6 and the v8.
Ro-Z, Right fron the get go, the TH-250 Metric Transmission was a weak sister. I had one in a 76 Nova and I hated the way it shifted two blocks away from the dealer when I bought the car. If a 350 motor is headed for your ride you'd want one of two transmissions. A Turbo-Hydro 400 transmission for the ultimate in dependability or a Turbo Hydro 350 transmission which has been modified through the years from the factory to make it nearly as good as the 400.
