All equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks etc are required to have operator manuals on the machine. It would be wise to read through this to understand the safety aspect first and foremost. There are generally two types of electric pallet jacks, a walk behind and a rider. The controls should be the same but the rider has a platform that you stand on while operating the pallet jack. The handle will house all of the controls, the only exception being that a rider pallet jack will have a grab bar in front for you to hold on to and it will have the buttons for lift, lower and the horn. The main handle will have these functions as well and you can use either one. The main control handle will most likely have a twist action handle for the forward and reverse. You will twist the handle in the direction you want to go. To slow down or reverse directions you will just twist the handle in the opposite direction. This is the desired way to slow down, and it is not necessary to use the brake unless there is some kind of electrical failure which won't allow the unit to slow down or stop electrically. The brake is operated by moving the control handle all the way up or down. Ultimately it is a good idea to read over the manufactures operation manual so that you are familiar with that particular machine and the safety features and aspects.
