Answer:

Most upholstery fabric cannot be laundered in the washing machine, as most upholstery fabrics are dry clean or spot clean only. However, there are other strong fabrics for slip cover purposes which would work better for your particular application and needs. Duck cloth is a durable fabric that washes well and will last a good, long time. Slipcovers which have been sprayed with Scotch Guard fabric protectant will stay stain free longer between washings. Just follow the directions on the can. You do not want to over wash the slipcover because it is subject to wear from washing. Remember, when washing a slipcover, you want to wash the entire slipcover set (the body of the couch and the cushion covers) all at the same time so they wear at the same rate. You can find duck cloth at most fabric stores. JoAnn fabrics has a lot of choices in their Home Dec department on the custom cut rack. Do not hesitate to also look in the apparel section for washable fabrics that are slipcover weight. Check the twill, duck cloth and denim color selections. Just be certain that your slipcover person knows you intend to wash your slipcover so that they make an allowance for shrinkage when making the slipcover. Oh, about wool fabric: Yes, wool and wool blends are very durable; however, you cannot expect to put wool in the washing machine with great results. Wool upholstery fabric will most likely state that it is dry clean only. Double check the cleaning recommendations.
You can fix the weight problem by using a heavier rod, or supporting it in the middle. What you might run into with upholstery fabrics is that they're sometimes too stiff to drape or gather well, and they might not be machine washable if you intend to wash the curtains. If you do mean to wash them or have them cleaned, I'd do that before sewing them.
