Question:

Need info on Inductors?

I am looking to install an inductor to install in line with my power connector on the panel of my Celestron CPC 1100. I have had problems with batteries, like those of booster packs. They give out small power spikes and one of those spikes wiped out my RA axis servo firmware. What kind of Inductor can I use? If not what can I install inline to keep the power at 12 volts DC 2 amps with spikes up to 5 amps for slewing. Thank you

Answer:

Radio Shack has inductors and noise filters for use with car audio systems. They used to have a kit of parts for $3.99 (270-030). Don't know if it's still available. They should have others, though. Anything along the lines of a voltage regulator will require a voltage source HIGHER than the 12 volts you're looking for. I presume you're using a 12-volt battery source, so your best bet is a noise filter, with perhaps a Zener Diode as a spike clipper I'd use one rated at 15 volts and 1 watt between the filter and the electronics. It's also a good idea to make sure the power switch is turned OFF while the battery pack is being connected. Turn on ONLY after the battery connection is securely made.
