Question:

New transmission fluid?

I heard that if your transmission has transmission fluid that hasn‘t been changed in a long time and then change the fluid with new transmission fluid (no flushing) that your transmission will fail.Is this true and if so why.

Answer:

OKAY FIRST OF ALL IF YOUR CHANGING THE FLUID YOU HAVE TO EITHER DROP THE PAN OR HAVE A MECHANIC USE A FLUSH SYSTEM MACHINE.NOW I KNOW AT MY SHOP WE USE A BG FLUSH MACHINE THAT PUSHES THE OLD FLUID OUT WHILE PUSHING THE NEW FLUID IN AND NOT CONTAMINATING THE NEW FLUID AND HERE'S THE KICKER MOST OF THE TIME WHEN SOMEONE JUST DROPS THE PAN TO DO A FLUSH AND CHANGE THE FILTER THEY USUALLY FORGET ABOUT THE TORQUE CONVERTER WHICH STILL CONTAINS THE OLD FLUID WHICH IN TURNS CONTAMINATES THE NEW FLUID AND POSSIBLY RUINS YOUR TRANSMISSION.THE MAIN REASON YOUR TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE FLUSHED (USUALLY EVERY 50,000 MILES) IS BECAUSE OF ALL THE METAL CHIPPINGS FROM INSIDE YOUR ENGINE.YOUR TRANNY HAS A MAGNET INSIDE YOU TRANNY PAN THAT COLLECTS THOSE METAL PARTICLES, BUT IF YOU NEVER CHANGE IT THAT MAGNET FILLS UP WITH METAL PARTICLES AND CANT ATTRACT ANYMORE SO THAT'S ONE WAY YOU CAN MESS UP YOUR TRANNY.SO IN TURN YOUR NEED TO DO A COMPLETE FLUSH OF YOUR SYSTEM AND DON'T GO TO SOME TWO CAR GARAGE MECHANIC BECAUSGUARANTEENTEE HE DONT HAVE THE SPECIAL EQUIPMENT HE NEEDS.THOSE FLUSHES SHOULD RUN YOU AROUND $150-$200 DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF TRANNY FLUID YOUR VEHICLE TAKESFOR EXAMPLE 2007 AND OLDER TOYOTA VEHICLES TAKE W/S (WORLD STANDARD FLUID) AND 2008 AND NEWER TAKE REGULAR TRANNY FLUID.WELL I HOPE THIS HELPS GOOD LUCK
Lots of different opinions on this subject, I would have the transmission serviced by a reputable transmission shop, Usually they evacuate the old fuel with one machine and new fluid goes in with another. have the filter changed also (if serviceable?) depends on the car, The service is between $90-$150.
Yes, it can happen. My brother changed the fluid on a Ford van once. It loosened up the varnishes and stuff in the transmission and it didn't last 20 miles before the car wouldn't move in drive.
