Actually the thing that makes a newspaper a good insulator is that it has a lot of trapped air in the paper fibersIt is the same idea as why blankets are good insulatorsAir itself is a fairly poor thermal conductor, and so any device that traps air (like a thermal cup for instance) can make a good insulator.
