Try Mothers aluminum polish before you spend a wad and get the polishing ball with it, you may be pleasently surprised.
The aluminum has a clear coat on it, get some aircraft stripper (in a spray can) from your auto parts store o take that off, then get a buffing wheel and some brown Tripoli and you can get it looking like new, switch to rouge and yo can get it looking like chromeyou will need to put clear coat back on it or keep it clean and waxed or it will tarnish again.
Buy LOW TEMP aluminum paint and make it look like new.I have restored 1 1985 and that is a lot of work and well worth the results.Nice Job on the 71.
I helped a friend restore an old Honda 160We did a combination of the things mentionedWe painted the engine cases with a high temp aluminum paintWe did the side covers by wet sanding with 400-800-1000 and then finishing with SemichromeOther misc bits we went with flat black (makes the polished aluminum pop)It wasn't exactly stock, but it looked greatIt would take an expert to know the difference.
put half stick butter in micro safe bowl, add 2 cups sugar and 1/4 cup cocoacook on high for 2 minutes, but watch close so it doesn't boil overStir wellpour over a box of cereal like rice checks and toss wellpress into buttered pan if you like or just toss out on aluminum foil so it doesn't have big clumpsWhen it has cooled, toss into a sack with 1 cup powdered sugar and shake well to coat title of this is TRASH
