Question:

Oil heat, can you share your opinion on it?

I currently rent in NJ, my wife and I are trying to buy a home. We have been looking for quite a while. Well we found a great house and we love it. The only problem is that it has oil heat. My first assumption was to have it switched over to gas but after researching i am nut sure if I should just leave it or not. The furnace was purchased in 2006, the tank is inside. The stove uses propane now, but i would probably just get an electric stove. Not sure how the dryer works though. Would you be kind of enough to share your opinions on gas verse propane? Thanks

Answer:

natural gas is the best kind of regular type central heat but it sounds like you dont have it to the house since the stove uses propane....i would not replace a brand new oil furnace with a propane furnace.. i might even hesitate to replace it with a natural gas furnace right away due it being new, even if gas is available....i would keep the oil furnace and perhaps install a supplimental kind of heat such as a pellet stove in case oil prices go back up,,,i believe oil prices right now are reasonable [ $2.00-$2.50 per gallon] but they could go back up..fyi regular heating oil is the same as thing as deisel fuel except deisel fuel is taxed more and therefore more expensive...but if you were to get low on oil or run out..you can fill an approved container with deisel fuel at the nearest station and dump it in your oil tank.....you arent suppose to do the opposite of that though...it is illegal to use heating oil in a deisel car or truck because is wasnt taxed [ enough]..i think deisel fuel is colored with a dye so the cops can tell the difference.....dan

what wrong with oil heat, I've had it for 30 years, have had to change the furnace once due to a bad heat exchanger, besides that it's clean if adjusted properly, also have a oil fired water heater, is great, also have an electric dryer and electric stove an wall oven, bill last month was $114.00, wash an dry cloths every night. But if you are going to change, an can go to gas, not propane. Big outlay of moneys to change. I also live in N.J. sorry to say, Hopatcong, Taxes, an sewers cost $9000.00 a year. an nothing but bungalows
