Well, the typical argument for the safety of carrying a 1911 in condition 1, is that with both a thumb safety and a grip safety the firearm cannot be fired unless you have a grip on the gun and have disengaged the thumb. They do not have a firing pin block safety as some do, but the contention is that it is extremely unlikely that the hammer can be dropped with adequate force on the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled. 1911s have a half c0cked position as well which in a something breaks around the hammer would prevent it hitting the firing pin. The argument around Glocks is different. Essentially, in a Glock with a round in the chamber there are a number of internal safeties design to prevent the striker pin from being released unless you pull the trigger. I know an instructor who used a Glock 19 in his class for more close to two decades and would drop it onto a hard floor (empty of course) with it c0cked and then show the class that the striker hadn't been released. I think in several thousand classes he only came up once where the striker was released when he picked the gun up - and in that case, something had actually broken inside the gun. So, the risk with a Glock generally isn't around the gun failing - rather it is that if the trigger gets pulled it WILL go off. So, when drawing the gun if you don't have your finger properly indexed, you will shoot yourself somewhere - there is a now famous DEA Agent video where he shoots himself with his Glock 22 when trying to holster it because he doesn't realize there is a round in the chamber. So, the reason people make the argument for not carrying in condition 1 is simply that the natural position when holding a gun has your finger in the trigger, you go to what's natural when you are under stress - voila.
