our tempstar HVAC heat exchanger has crack, do i need to change the whole unit or have H xchanger only replac?
It depends on the age of the entire HVAC ,if the heat exchanger has a waranty of coverage still in effect the part may cost nothing except the labor . If the unit is quite old then you may want to buy a more efficient model . Do not run it with a bad exchanger as you will put carbon monoxide into your home . CONSEQUENCES OF DOING SO COULD BE DEADLY !!!!!!
It would help to know the age of the unit. If it is an older unit, or you live in an area with cold winters it would behoove you to replace it with a more energy efficient unit. It is crucial that you DO NOT run the unit until it is either replaced or repaired. It could put Carbon Monoxide into your home. A little checking out up front and save a lot of headaches ( and money ) in the future.
