Question:

Painting already glazed ceramic food canisters?

I bought some plain white, glossy, glazed ceramic food canisters (for flour, sugar, etc) to have my young child paint them. I‘m finding sites saying to use 150 grit sandpaper, use a primer and then acrylic paints, and seal the canisters. My question is what kind of sealant is safe/good to use on the outside of the canisters that would withstand handwashings? Isn‘t 150 grit too coarse? Thanks!

Answer:

Yawn. I've got almost 3 feet of snow left in the drive. Quityerbitchin.
I wouldn't use acrylic paint on any ceramic thing that I ever wanted to wash. Too hard to get it to stick, even if you sand first and yes, I would use a finer grit sandpaper. They do, however, make exterior grade acrylic varnishes, sold in the same place as acrylic craft paints and if you wanted to use this method they are what i would use to seal the paint. They are quite good; I have an item with that varnish on it which has been outdoors for two winters now and the varnish is unaffected. There is paint made specifically for use on glazed surfaces. Pebeo is the brand, most craft stores sell it, and if the painted item is baked then the paint is even dishwasher proof. Even if you don't bake it, it will stand gentle handwashing quite a few times.
