Question:

Physics Help: What takes more power?

Lifting a car with your arms or lifting it with a car jack? and please explain why

Answer:

Power is the measure of how fast you are doing work. If you lift the car with your arms at the same speed as the jack does you are generating the same amount of power. Assuming you CAN lift the car with your arms it takes 3 seconds to lift it the specified height using the jack it takes 30 seconds to lift the same amount you have generated 10 times the power with your arms that you have with the jack. Using the jack allows you to lift the car with a smaller force but more slowly so it is LESS powerful The same amount of work is done in both cases but because the jack is slower it is less powerful in the true meaning of the word. People consistently talk about power when they mean force.
Since you cannot lift a car with your arms, the question is pointless.
