It's made of resin. Resin is a liquid that hardens into a plastic like material. You pour resin into a mold. The original piece was probably carved from wood. The mold was poured over the original piece, so the resin picked up the wood grain from the mold. Carving or sculpting small things is really pretty common. That horse is pretty big.
