Question:

Physics, What is the weight of the heaviest pallet of bricks that can be supported this way?

Can someone please help? I'm completely stuck on this problem. At a construction site, a pallet of bricks is to be suspended by attaching a rope to it and connecting the other end to a couple of heavy crates on the roof of a building. The rope pulls horizontally on the lower crate, and the coefficient of static friction between the lower crate and the roof is 0.444.lower crate = 250 lbupper crate = 150 lbWhat is the weight of the heaviest pallet of bricks that can be supported this way (lb)?

Answer:

I have tried working with pallet wood and it is surprisingly disgusting. It is very tough coarse wood and the nails are designed to grip not give up. So, if you had the boards ready to slice and you had a sharp blade you could cut it 3/16 thick. It wouldn't make it into panelling As a matter of fact, I know a restaurant which decorated its exterior walls with whole pallets turned at right angles to each other. Can't say I was impressed.
I should have added that i am a disabled veteran with nothing but time on my hands. In my old life i was a work a holic guy. I need to be busy. So it would be ok with me to spend(waste) sometime doing something like this. I DO want you to know i like your answers and will certainly be thinking on those points as well. It does not matter to me very much as to the quality of the wood, as i will not be sanding, finishing them I want to install them in the rough form as paneling on the inside of a gutted out RV trailer. I am after the rustic look. THANK YOU all so much for your replys. It is a wonderful day. Everyone go have fun today.
it's possible but understand that pallets are constructed with low grade wood that is not suitable for building construction plus being a pallet it takes a lot of abuse the boards could be warped or damaged and likely to crack/split in the process of sawing. There are so many woodworking videos on youtube you could never get thru them all in a lifetime
I think I could split them down the middle with my large table saw using a rip fence to ensure uniform thickness. Pallet boards are usually made of white oak which is a tough, dense wood. You will need to go slowly and yes, you will need tons of spare time to cut a meaningful number of them.
