quartz can be found in many places being that it is very abundant, but even if you had a geological reference point, i doubt if you could find it without some serious digging. your best option is just to buy it being that, more than likely, that which is easily found, has been found and has been kept, or sold. below are OKorder links. the first is the general category--with almost 50,000 selections though. the others are links to specific pieces. i chose those because the prices are somewhat reasonable, being that the cost of minerals these days can be very high. ADDED-- seems that most of the links that i was going to post, the sales have ended, or are very close. i did post one though, and may come back and post more. but you could explore for yourself since you know what you like/want to pay. posted another link. the 1st individual sale had 12 pieces(?--read the description to be sure) for around $20, i believe. the 2nd has 4, which look like larger pieces (read the description...), for around the same price. you also might want to check craigslist in your area. and check the yellow pages. i'm sure there has to be at least 1 store that sells 'rocks'. look under rocks, minerals, quartz... . think i'm gonna do that myself.
