Question:

polishing up some silver?

I was wondering if anyone here knew of any quick way to polish some silverware? It is quite old and very tarnished.I was going to go buy some silver polish but before I drove up to the shops and spend the money I thought I'd ask you lot Any ideas out there?

Answer:

This is super easy and fun! Find a wide open container that will allow your silverware to lay flat in itA baking pan, small tote, something that will hold waterLine the bottom of the container with plain old aluminum foil Lay the silverware on top of the aluminum foilBoil water or you can use very hot water from the tap (the hotter the better/faster this works)Mix 1/4 cup of baking soda for every quart of water Pour the mixture over the silverware enough to cover Right before your eyes the tarnish will disappear without you even touching a spoonIt's an electro-chemical reactionThe silverware must be covered by the water-baking soda solution and also be touching the aluminum foilThe sulfide that tarnished the silver will be transfered to the aluminum foilThis will NOT remove any silver.
Well Aluminum as 5 electrons in it's outer shell, so it's primary ion would most likely be A(3-) because it would accept 3 electrons, giving it a negative charge
