HThe reason you battery will not hold a charge is because it is always plugged in. With the laptop off, take out the battery and then run it on the adapter. You will not hurt the laptop by not having the battery in. Not all laptops come with web cams, you can buy one for 25-40 dollars. Have Fun

I have no idea if asbestos was ever used in carpets. I do not think the fibers are strong enough to hold together. But old carpets are full of various dusts, a good dust mask would be a good idea. Use a box cutter to make the carpet smaller before pulling up, that will reduce the dust you stir up.
Not much danger from it catching fire, you can add an external web cam. Not all laptops come with them
