Question:

Polyurethane floors - what fills the tiny cracks?

I have wood floors in my apartment and am putting a few coats of polyurethane on them, to protect them and make them shiny. Question- does the (water based Home Depot polyurethane) fill the little cracks between the wood slices so that the floor is essentially one smooth surface? Thanks!

Answer:

On floors that are much older than 10 years the cracks are usually not filled when refinishing. The reason for this is that the wood will expand and contract with season changes. When the floor expands the filler or putty in the cracks will crack and not look good. If the floor is newer with just a few very minor cracks you can fill with a trowelable wood filler, such as woodwise brand filler. This would be the method if completely sanding floors down... If you are just recoating the floor it would be best to use a matching wood putty. prior to buffing or coating the floor. This way it will seal it in to the floor.
Yes, put a least 4 coats for a perfect finish, no need to sand between coats.
