Question:

Pony rug sizes? How many rugs needed?

What is size rug would a 14.2hh connemara type pony need? Also what basic rugs would a pony whos turned out and stabled need? Thanks

Answer:

To get the measurement you should get a measuring tape and measure him. The amount of blankets needed is up to you. If you plan on showing your horse and don't want him with a big bulky coat and shedding all over the place then you should get a winter blanket. If you don't want your horse's fur to get longer coming in to winter then you should get him a light blanket then switch to your winter blanket when it starts to snow or get below zero. In the summer you should get a fly sheet if you don't want your horse to get eat-in alive by mosquito's. Also you should get a cooler for after being ridden so he doesn't get cold when cooling out in the winter. Hope this helps
I think you need: a turnout rug when he is in the field a stable rug when he is stabled an exercise rug when he is exercising you can use HW,Shires,HH and so on.HW is designed for chunky horses, and HH is cheaper. well depending on where you are and the daytime temps i would go with a light weight turnout to a mid weight turnout rug. GOOD LUCK!!!
Average Rug Sizes
Rather than guess the size it would be best if you could try other ponys' rugs which would give you a good idea of the size you need. Sizes can sometimes vary between manufacturers. Your Connemara pony should be fairly hardy and might not need rugging up much unless the weather is really bad or he/she is clipped or getting on a bit. If you can afford it a basic wardrobe would be: 1 lightweight outdoor 2 medium outdoor 1 heavyweight outdoor with neck (only if it gets really cold where you are) 1 light indoor 1 medium indoor 1 fleece (can be used as a cooler) This sounds like a lot of rugs, but they should last for years and your pony will have rugs for every type of weather! Remember, outdoor rugs get soaked and filthy so you need to have a few. Indoor rugs should be washed regularly to ensure they stay breathable. Most fit in a normal washing machine. Sometimes it is possible to buy really cheap rugs at shows and auctions, but some are useless and it is best to buy a decent brand, such as Weatherbeeta. Make sure the rugs fit well and check fittings regularly because badly fitting rugs can cause a lot of discomfort for a horse and can also be dangerous. Now's the time where you might get some good deals on reduced rugs so have fun buying!
The best idea would be to measure your pony. You need an ordinary tape measure and you measure from the centre of his/her chest to the point of the buttock in a straight line. (I had a 14.2 pony who was 6' 6 and that is unusual - if I'd just bought average for him it wouldn't have fit so safest to measure.) How many rugs you need depends on how much you want to spend as they will quite happily spend the night in an outdoor rug if you can't spare the cash for a stable rug as well. If it's not a problem then I'd say a stable rug, a good quality turnout rug and a wicking cooler.
