Question:

Porsche automatic transmission?

It is my understanding that the Porsche PDK transmission is automatic is that correct? Is it just like in a regular car or is it involve f1 shifters?

Answer:

The PDK outwardly is like the Tiptronic, in that it can be operated as a pure automatic transmission, but can also be shifted through the gears manually by the driver. The PDK is a twin-clutch transmission, with even gears on one shaft and odd ones on the other. What this means is, in manual mode, it shifts gears extremely quickly. In manual mod, you shift the gears up and down using F1-type flappy paddles behind the steering wheel. The Tiptronic, on the other hand, is a traditional single-shaft automatic which means the gear changes in manual mode are slower.like most automatics.
Many race cars are now automatics, and Porsche is following suit. The seven speed PDK is lightning fast and light years ahead of the Tiptronic and Tiptronic S Porsche transmissions it replaces. The standard PDK transmission on the 2011 911 Turbo S coupe allows it to go 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, beating the 638 HP 'super' Corvette ZR1 (3.4 seconds) with only 530 HP. The Turbo S is Porsche's premium turbocharged sports car. The new 620 HP 911 GT2 RS, really a racer made street legal, still comes with a six speed manual transmission. It only ties the ZR1 at 3.4 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. However, the GT2 RS will go 205 mph while the Turbo S only achieves a maximum track speed of 196.
