Question:

PRICE OF HEATING EXCHANGE UNIT?

GOODMAN H A-18 YRS. OLD HAS CRACK IN HEATING EXCHANGE. CAN I REPLACE IT FOR LESS THAN $1,000 ?

Answer:

If you can do it yourself, will be only the cost of the part: $75.00 to $100.00. If you call one of those money hungry Heating Contractors, it can be as much as that $1000.00. In fact an 18 years old furnace you will be better off replacing the whole thing with a new energy efficient unit. Good luck...!
If you PAY someone to change out the heat exchanger figure around 700-800 bucks installed. If you were to say attempt to replace it yourself Then you could try and source it online and install yourself. Personally with the age (18 years) I would put it this way what else will break then next thing you know youve dropper 300 next year, then say 500 the year after. So now you could have just replaced the entire furnace with a new one. But I can see if you dont say have 3K laying around for a new furnace then I suspect the repair route would be more cost effective. The sad thing is if you look around on the Net you can find a new furnace for around 600-750. If you go with basically a like for like furnace your talking about a 4-5 hour swap out. So if you find someone local willing to just do the install work @ say 80 bucks an hour that puts you right around your original target # of 1K. Just something to think about.
I havent been in the field for some time now. I may be out of touch with prices. Although, I would say yes to your question. I agree with the others if your going to drop a grand.. You'd be better off with a new unit. Energy saving alone would pay you back
