Question:

Question about driving a motorcycle in the heat for extended time.?

I don't mind staying overnight in a hotel if I need to.

Answer:

Bike okorder to find truck stops for fuel and food. The AAA site has it's TripTik on-line if that is your planning preference. I would expect your friend to pay for gas and the hotel you overnight in, or at least what a motel-6 would cost and you pay for any upgrades. If you are not in a hurry and would like a more relaxed ride you can select avoid highways and google will give you routing on the back roads. Take four 250 mile days rather than a pair of 500 milers.
90 isn't really too hot. It was about 115 here today and I still rode my bike. The weather has actually started to cool a little. I have to admit though, my bike doesn't like being stuck in traffic for too long at those temperatures but it's great on the highway
I wouldn't worry about the bike It will do fine. I have had knee surgery so a couple hours on my tour bike at a pop is more than enough. I get off stretch my legs, drink some water, smoke a cigarette and talk trash with my friends. Take your time. Be safe. Don't be obsessive about how many hours you can do in given period. When I plan trips I figure 400 miles a day. If I wanna do more great. If I wanna do less fine. The bike will out run you.
The bike will be fine. I ride my Harley here in Southern Arizona all the time, and live by the GM desert proving grounds. When you fill up the tank and ride from gas station to gas station, give yourself and the bike a rest (more for you than the bike) and stretch out a bit...and hydrate!! Drink water! ince it is a bike you are a little unfamiliar with, ride it primarily in the daylight. I've rode in the past around the US for weeks at a time, take it easy, don't push your limitations and you and the bike will be fine. Check the oil every few gas stops, have it changed if possible before the trip. Use premuim gas. Be prepared for wet weather and take a rainsuit, bandanas, light jacket or leather shirt etc.
He'll be fine. He's not idling the whole way. He will actually be riding. So if he keeps moving there will be no issues. Even liquid cooled motorcycles rely on the air moving through the radiator to cool the fluid which then cools the motor. So, heat is really only a factor for air cooled motorcycles like the Sportster or VStar or GS500 when they are running and stopped. With no airflow over the cooling fins on the cylanders, the motor will overheat, If you're moving, you're allowing the heat exchangers to do their job. You/he have/has NOTHING to worry about. It doesn't need to rest. If you want, save the receipts and such and make an Iron Butt ride out of it. Not many people can say they've done an Iron Butt ride. Have fun... D
