I think it would be more accurate to call your dads side of the family realistic.
Most people make other people feel like crap because something bad happened to them. Or in their case they probably had a dream but it didn't go through that well. No one can tell you, you can't do something. Just go with your dreams, and what you want. And like you said, believe in yourself. :)

Pursue your dream, and work hard at it. They aren't trying to crush your dreams; they just want you to have a good future. If you go for a degree in filmmaking, and study hard for it, your dad's side of the family will eventually come to accept your interests. Feel free to email me a youtube video that you have made :). But just know that you have taken the hard path, which will get you there eventually, but will take a lot of work. -
