if Islam allows husbands beat their wives if they refuse orders, then how is that beating preformed ? i doubt it should not be too harmful for the wife
the two most common interpretations of this verse which you're referring to (excluding beating your wife) are: 1) the particular word used for beat has many translations in arabic and every other time it has been used in the quran it means to leave or move away from, so it should read husbands can leave their wives. 2) you can tap her with something like a toothbrush. it can't leave any type of mark and if it does, i'm sure you have to pay for the damage done to her or something like that.
