Question:

Real Estate Agent Advice?

Ok so right now I'm 16 and i have an interest in real estate and also in a side job. I'm going to be attending college in a couple years to get some minor degrees such as building, business, mechanical, and drafting. And i was wondering if being a real estate agent would be appropriate for me right now. I know now's not the best time to sell. But if i sell one (1) small property, that would pay as much as i get in a year at my little call in part time job. I also am friends with many of the Realtors around the local area, so i know that would help. So my question is, would this be a suitable job for someone like me? Is there an age requirement? Does it take more the two semesters to get your license? And is this a full-time, hands-on, type job? Thanks!

Answer:

I don't think you can legally work at 16 without a permit of some type. I am also sure that many real estate agents in your city that you know would be glad to have you as an apprentice. This will expose you to a lot about the real estate field. Your duties would be mostly that of a gofer, go take this document to the boss, go run this off at the copy machine, go email this to our new buyer or seller. You could also answer the telephone and direct the call to the appropriate individual. In doing this you would earn valuable experience and terminology in the real estate field. this would help prepare you for your state real estate exam, ensuring you a better chase to pass. By all means complete your college and get your degree. This will be very valuable in your future endeavors. This your foundation. While there you might take courses in the real estate field, thus giving you a better shot at taking your real estate exam and being successful the first time. There are many ways to obtain your state real estate license. #1 There are on line real estate courses #2 There are courses where you attend class over a certain period of time to prepare you for taking the state real estate exam. #3 There are 1-2 day cram courses offered by real estate schools that would prepare you for taking the state real estate exam. #4 You may attend your local community or 4 year college taking real estate course leading up to taking your state real estate exam. #5 Some of your major franchise real estate offices offer free courses that would prepare you to take your state real estate exam. You have to select the one that best fit your schedule and ability to learn. If you simply are interested in the investment end of the real estate industry a real estate license is not required. I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck. FIGHT ON
RE agency is NOT the ideal occupation if you just want to earn some extra money. IT requires an interest in and understanding of the idea of fiduciary. In this arena, you represent others and if you do not do so correctly, you ARE fired, fined and sometimes, jailed. IT is a mini form of being an attorney. Stick with being a real estate investor. or. starting today, study real estate law and see what you think of it.
No. Real Estate is no different than any other profession. It takes time, money and self discipline to make a living at it. Some of us that have been in this business for more than 20 years, are struggling financially. It really is a 24/7 -365 job at the whim of others
I must congratulate you on your strong initiative and desire to work, make money and add value to the economy!! There were already some good answers here for you, especially 'loanmaster's' comment. It's probably the case that you would need to be 'of age' to get a real estate license anyway. It sounds like earning money is the part of the equation that would best help you at this point and it sounds like knowing how to do that would be the thing that really makes a difference for you. There are ways to make in anything (real estate included) by intimately knowing the details of the market and business practices. It's never too early to begin learning those things. One thing that would be good for you to do is to figure out some type of product that you could sell to others so that you're, in effect, working for yourself while you're going to school and building continuing your education. Also, read, read, read! There are tons of books on real estate, investing and sales. One great book that I read when I was your age that has contributed to my success is THINK and GROW RICH by Napoleon Hill. Keep looking, searching and researching! Best Wishes, EricJ
