Firstly I know there is a very good club near me which does 5 lessons a week, just to let you know.Firstly could you please tell me how much of white crane is actually fun and how much percentage is kicks and how much punches.I'm a very althletic boy age 15 and I don't know much about this style. Is it fairly exciting and what I might enjoy? Thanks for you help.

Answer:

White Crane is a very traditional style and there are not many legit teachers, make sure you have a good qualified intructor first, maybe do a check on the internet, enter their name in google and see what comes up because if they are a legit instructor and not just learning from video tapes then you are lucky WC itself is about half internal half external art, its mostly punching, dont know how exciting it is, that will depend on your teacher
There are two types of White Crane one is Tibetan which is called HOP GAR or Bak hok it has both high and low kicks with long arm movements Fujian white crane has lower kicks and shorter arm/hand movements...At your age both will be fine

White Crane Kung Fu combines defense and attack and uses both soft and hard power. It also emphasizes firm yet evasive footwork. It is a direct, linear and deceptive martial art. This particular system is called Fei He or Flying Crane. Flying Crane makes use of both high and low kicks yet has a marked preference for rapid hand techniques. It stresses empty-hand as well as weapons training, two-person sets, self-defense drills and free-sparring.
I am a student of White Crane Fist. If you can, please tell me the name of the teacher, the school and the address so I can give an answer based on fact and not speculation... which is something that is rampant on this forum. There are different schools or versions of WCF. There is also th Tibetan White Crane, which is related to the Lama Fist. I have no real knowledge of Tibetan style. First thing is, if you are referring to the Fukien WCF: it is not like most martial arts you are familiar with. It was developed by a woman named Fang Chi Niang. Her father was a master of the 18 Lohan Style. It is an Internal art that uses concepts, movement and intention as the foundation of its arsenal. White Crane fist will develop the ability to execute explosive power against an attack. There really is not too much punching-type striking. When you see a closed fist, it usually is a grappling technique. Palm thrusting, claw grapples, spear hand and finger thrusts are used. The foundation training for WCF is San zhan, also spelled San jan or San Chien. The latter is the closest since it is a Fukienese art. San Chien develops power and rootedness. Fukien WCF has influenced the Five Ancestor Fist, which contains WCF concepts. It is also the predecessor to what is known today as Karate, both the Shuri and Naha lineages. If you are fortunate enough to have a Fukien WCF school near you, you would be a fool not to take full advantage. I have to travel an hour to see my Sifu. And if I had to travel more, I would. Please, send me the info so I can give you my researched results.
