Question:

Really want a laptop?

I'm 15 and I'm trying to persuade my dad to get me a laptop, any ideas? or is a laptop at my age worth it?

Answer:

Well you should look at it this way. How would you use it? Is it so your chats with your friends are more private? Or are you creative and like to edit and make videos or artwork? Personally I would think maybe waiting until college would be a good idea, it's only about 3 more years. Think about it in the sense that a laptop you buy now will last until you go to college, but do you want to be the kid going to college with an old run down laptop? A lot can change in technology in 3 years! I would wait for college so you get the best bang for your buck when you REALLY need it!
I'm almost 15 (will be on the 19th) and really want a laptop too. It's totally worth it because it will last for a long period of time - so you can get more use out of it as you go along. Also it's great for doing hw so you can have it all in one place - this way if you have to do a group project or something you can always have your work with you and not have to worry about getting a flash drive (which are easy to lose).
I've had my own computer since I was 16. I got into some trouble over it though. Now at 21 I have a laptop for college. What do you want the laptop for? to look cool? People in high school do not need laptops. they need a family computer that is monitored by adults and a computer that will get their assignments for school done. Sorry. I can't take your side on this one. Also here's another thing- my laptop was $900, within a year XP was updated to vista, then my hard drive crashed, another $130. Plus programs. It's NOT cheap. Also if you get a laptop you need wireless internet. That's another router which can run anywhere from $50-200. but a good one is around $110 it's not cheap and you don't need one until college so wait.
* I think a laptop is well worth it* My son, my H and myself all have laptops! Just be sure to get the extended warranty as it will pay for itself in no time*
I can't really say whether or not a laptop is worth it for a 15, it depends on the cirucumstances. Also talking your dad into it will have alot to do with why he doesn't want you to have one. Some things you can try is pointing out that it can help you with your homework. Since you can take it to friends houses, and work on reports or writing projects, as well as being able to access the internet for studying and research at home (if you have a router) and in places that have hot spots such as librarys, coffee shops etc. If money is an issue, you can get rebuilt laptops. Shop around, and do your research. Find the best prices on laptops, for what you need, and want. Offering to pay for some of it could help. So if you have a job, or babysit, offer to pitch in a bit. Chances are you won't make enough to buy one yourself, but even if you can pay for part of it, or make payments that could help. Just keep in mind when you discuss this with him try to show him that you are mature enough to handle owning your own computer. Its a big investment, and not something for a child. Try to act grown up, and mature when you talk to him. Don't whine, complain, yell, and stuff like that. And don't use the old stand by excuse all my friends have them. That rarely if ever works. Just explain to him your reasons for wanting one, and be open to the reasons he has for not wanting you to get one. I wish you luck though. If your parents are anything like mine you will need it. I am 25, and didn't get my own computer untill I was 21. My parents promised me they'd get me one since I was about 7, but it took me that long. I did eventually get my laptop.
