Question:

Replacing 99 slk 230 exhaust system?

I have a mercedes slk 230 that came with a very annoying exhaust system, Its very noisy. I wanted to take it off and just replace it with a normal quiet exhaust. I was wondering if anyone knew how much it would cost to replace? I do not know much about cars, but just as a side note if you look at the pipe, its one unit that runs the full length of the car, it is not broken down into units you can separate. Thank you!!

Answer:

The exhaust is actually in 2 pieces. The first half is the downpipe from the manifold and includes the catalysts. The 2nd half joins after the catalysts by screwing the flanges together and putting a seal in-between. The first half is the most expensive because of the catalytic converters so have the vehicle raised and the exhaust closely examined to see what is required.
first things first, if your carb is pretty well shot get that stuff first. as long as the 4bbl is adjusted correctly it will run better than now for sure also a spectre filter is a good idea. then go with exhaust. i would say x pipes arent very important and theyre expensive. go with 2 and a half inch pipe all the way back to some thrush weldeds shouldnt be very expensive. or if you like extreme sound go with glass packs which will be even cheaper. id say shopping around you can find someone to do the exhaust for like 200-300 bucks depending on what you want exactly. this can all work the other way around too. i mean if your carb works fine now you could do the exhaust first if you wanted. no matter which one you pick your performance will be helped for sure with proper adjustment
