Question:

Replacing Automatic Transmission - Jeep Patriot?

I have recently found out i have to replace my 2007 Jeep Patriot Sport 4x4 transmission which is currently automatic. I was wondering what is cheaper of the 2 options. Replacing the automatic with a new one or switching it out for a standard. I have contacted garages to just get the transmission repaired but no one will repair a cvt transmission so i have no choice but to replace it. I would like to know which option is cheaper

Answer:

The chances of swapping in a standard transmission are probably slim to none. Not only do you have the costs of installing the transmission but you also have to install the clutch pedal and any bracketing needed to hang the pedal. Not to mention all the labor involved. It would probably cost more to put in a standard transmission than to replace the existing CVT. And then you have emissions issues. In modern vehicles, engine/tranny combos are typically married to one another .the vehicle is emission-certified based on a specific tranny/engine combo. If you change one or the other then things generally don't work out too well. I would suggest you cruise some of the Patriot Forums out there to find what others have done or discovered in dealing with an ailing CVT. I searched 2007 jeep patriot cvt repair and got a few links to forum websites. Apparently there was an option in '07 for the Lifetime Warranty; shell out $750 and your tranny was covered forever. Did you take advantage of that offer? Have you brought it to a dealership? Give it a try. In fact, if there's more than one dealership to go to stop by all of them. Prices I saw in the one forum link I checked ran from $3000 to $4500 for a replacement. I suspect you'll find most shops are just going to replace the unit versus repair it. Time is money and they can't afford to tie up a tech doing a tranny rebuild not to mention the warranty that will come with a new or rebuilt unit. The garages you contacted .were they transmission shops? A normal garage is probably not gonna tackle the rebuild of any tranny, let alone a CVT. And besides, would your really want a general repair shop to work on your transmission?
