Question:

Replacing car exhaust system for 2001 buick regal (flange vs clamp)?

I have a hole in the top of my muffler and a hole in my resonator as well (rusted out). I can‘t find a cat-back system, so I‘m forced to buy everything a la carte. I have worked on my car a lot under the hood but have never worked on the exhaust system. My question is what the difference between a flange and a clamp is? Don‘t they serve the same purpose?

Answer:

2. a Marble b Quartzite c Meta-granite d Slate
After a new built engine you have to think about the transmission, 212,000 miles is a lot for a car, buicks are good cars but a transmission may be more than the engine, of course once it is all said and done it may go another 212,000 miles,,,a new car might be what you need right now especially in the northern states where it is colder in the winter.
Flange is where they meet up, one male side, and one receiving female side. They clamp together to seal it off, exactly like the flange on the exhaust manifolds where they meet the pipe. The clamp style slides together and you use a cheap u bolt style clamp that holds it all together. Either will work but i would guess that pieces of pipe with ubolt exhaust clamps will be cheaper. Dont be afraid of working on exhaust, it is easy and very hard to mess up. You will know if you dont get a good seal. If it is small there are puttys that can seal it as well or tapes but our idea is solid, just go the more inexpensive route or the one that fits your needs.
