Question:

Ring made entirely out of quartz?

Last week I found a fist sized clump of clear quartz crystal. It's really not worth much, so I was trying to think of a creative use for it. I'm wondering if it's possible to make a solid quartz ring. The ring wouldn't have any metal, but just a hoop of pure quartz. Does anything like this exist? Would it be possible to make something like this, or take it somewhere and get it made?

Answer:

Quartz is fine for initial piercings but you need to call your piercer and ask if they carry the jewelry and if not whether or not they can order something or you bring one in. Not all places carry quartz retainers and not all places will let you bring jewelry in but they should be willing to order one for you if they don't carry it. Get it pierced with a retainer. Nose piercings take about 6 months to heal and you should never change an unhealed piercing.
As I have stated, you will need to ask your piercer if he/she is willing to use something like that as initial jewelry. You may need to shop around and speak to several different piercers. Explain the situation and ask if they have glass or quartz retainers at the shop, as initial jewelry is often included with the piercing price. Do this BEFORE you go get pierced. And, as I previously explained to you, you will need to leave your initial jewelry in for 6-8 weeks before changing it out. There is a reason for this, it's not some stupid crap I'm spouting. The 6-8 week time frame allows your body to create a flesh tunnel, called a fistula, around the piercing. This effectively closes an open wound. By not waiting through the healing period to change out your jewelry, you are introducing bacteria directly into your bloodstream, greatly increasing your chances of complications, rejection, and infection. The last thing you want is for your nose to become infected, as this can lead to SERIOUS, SOMETIMES FATAL respiratory infections. Again, speak to the piercer/s at the shop you are thinking of going to. If they won't pierce with something made of glass or quartz or flesh toned titanium, call a few other shops and ask them.
