I'm going to Schoolcraft College (Livoni,MI) this winter and can't decide which one to take. I took clay in high school, which I liked a lot. Figured ceramics would be more like that then scupture. But I'm not quite sure. Pros and cons? Which one did you take, and did you like it or not? How are they different, how are they similar? Thanks for the advice!
If you take sculpture, you can still work in clay. If you do ceramics, you can work sculpturally. However, as a rule, ceramics are more functional. One question to find out: how conceptual is this school? In my school (VERY conceptual,) the sculpture department did not favor carving, or any skills. Instead, people worked with motors, kinetics, light, etc. I chose sculpture because I thought it was more broad.but I think I should have chose ceramics (if those were my only choices.) One thing about ceramics I didnt like was how the clay pulled all the moisture out of my hands. In retrospect, if I could do it all again, I would choose metalsmithing or fibers.
