I have always had the top loader and prefer it.
The investment you will make in either machine is not too different. You will get more efficiency in water, electricity, and detergent use with one of the new HE front loaders. They can hold more clothes and get more clothes clean than a top loading agitator type machine. We just bought a new set of front loading LG machines, washer and dryer, and I can tell you the difference is dynamic. The clothes rinse out better, you use half the water, and overall it is quieter when spinning. Good luck!
The front loading ones are more energy efficient. We bought one a few years ago and I love it to death. It uses way less water and still does an awesome job on the clothes. Try to get one with adjustable legs/feet so that you can balance it well. They can vibrate quite a bit otherwise.
You should first figure out what you are really looking for in a washing machine. If it is energy and water efficiency and a stimulus package that can let you take advantage of tax rebates, a front load washer is your choice. However, these are more expensive and some of them tend to break down easily. That is because they have more modern features in them that wear out the motor easily. Top loaders may not be as energy and water efficient but these have simple functions that are already good enough for a large family. Most of these are also durable.
