I have a 98 Honda civic ex(si clone) running on a b18c1(98 gsr). Recently my third gear messed up. It started with just grinding like once a day then it would get worse and worse to the point where it just grinds all the time and the gear just won‘t go in period. The previous owner told me that he installed a new clutch because third would grind all the time and once he installed the new clutch the problem was fixed but after I bought it like 6 months with the new clutch it started grinding again(I‘m pretty sure a new clutch would last way longer). I wanna buy a gsr tranny but I‘m worried ill get ripped off or something cause idk much about transmissions. My other option is to just fix the problem. I don‘t wanna buy a new clutch cause the problem will just come back again. So my question is: should I look for a gsr tranny(I race alot) or keep it and try to fix the transmission it has already(civic tranny)? Also what could be the reason why it grinds?
The transmission is already broken from the previous owner. A new clutch and new clutch setting might be able to hide the griding but it would turn up eventually. I think its better to sell the car. New transmission rebuilds can cost you atleast a grand.
Same thing happened to me. Chick sold me a lemon and I ended up buying a new reconstructed tranny.
Gsr tranny (y80) is no good for racing unless you are are going turbo. About the grinding problem, you can rebuild the transmission. If you want a good transmission for racing, get a b16a sir transmission (s4c) or an Integra type r transmission (itr s80) or you could get the civic type r transmission (ctr s4c). The type r transmissions are stronger, are geared better and they come with a strong LSD and you will feel the car move a whole lot faster. The grinding problem is common among b series transmissions.
