Question:

Should I put sand in my leopard geckos tank?

I was wondering if i should have sand in my leopard geckos tank or something else. she is about 1 year old and has had sand in her tank for about 1 year. i was just reading through some leopard gecko sites and alot of people say sand is bad. i personally have not had a problem with sand and would like to know what the people of yahoo think......

Answer:

babys SHOULD NOT have sand because they might eat it and get intesnial problems and eventually die but for adult geckos its supposably fine. I have a leo and its a baby and i use eco carpet its the best you dont have to change it alot its not messy and my gecko seems to like it just fine. Sand has to many cons then pros and can be dangerous in my opinion i wouldn't use it if you want to find something more natural then eco carpet i would go with bark which makes a good substrate you can buy it at petsmart they have everything for geckos.
i wouldnt i use zoo med excavator and make hides and all that with it to its fun and safe
Newspaper, paper towels, slate tiles and non-adhesive shelf liner are all completely safe and suitable substrates... the last two also having a pretty natural look. NEVER use sand for leopard geckos of ANY age.
I have used sand with several different reptiles and haven't had any problems. If the gecko starts eating it, you'll want to use something else. Keep a ceramic tile from lowes or home depot under the food and water dish. Then if the food falls out it won't get covered in sand before your gecko eats it. It will also help keep sand from getting into the water dish and being ingested there. Cage carpet has also been known to snag and wrap around toes cutting off the circulation and eventually painfully amputating the toes of reptiles. Every substrate has it's drawbacks. It's my personal opinion that we should try to recreate a natural environment for our pets to reduce the stress put on them by keeping them as pets. Look at the substrate they would be on in their natural environment and use that.
I got a gecko on saturday. Ever since then he has been sick every day. He is on sand aswell but before he wasnt. Does this have an impact on him? What should I do to make him stop regurgitating
