Went in for an oil change and the mechanic said my exhaust system was gonna go at some point; said it wasn t a matter if if, but rather when. He suggested I just keep driving it till it goes. I drive a 97 Subaru Outback and spent over a grand last year to replace blown head gaskets. My question is how much does an exhaust system replacement actually cost and is if worth it to have replaced? Also how will I know when it goes, will this cause me to be stuck out on the road somewhere or worse yet could it cause an accident if it falls off when I m driving?
Drive it until it goes. Every car's exhaust gives out at some point. Its unlikely it will fall off. Inspect it yourself every month or so and keep a ear out for noises, indicating a leak.
Vitamin B12 is great for exhaustion.
When it goes the engine noise will be louder - how much louder will depend on what part rots through, falls off or develops a hole. Part of it could drop down and remain partially attached to drag along the road. One part may completely drop off the car Where a hole appears in the exhaust system the hot gases escaping could cause a fire. Since it is going to have to be replaced soon why not do it now. Seldom does all of the system need to be replaced, just part of it. How much of yours and the cost is impossible for anyone to state here UPDATE - equally impossible to answer, too many possibilities and variables
Normally, when an exhaust system goes either an exhaust pipe cracks or a hole forms in a muffler - - - - you'll hear it when it goes. Replacing is not a matter of choice - the noise and potential carbon monoxide poisoning requires an intact exhaust system. Unfortunately, Subaru exhaust systems are more expensive than other makes of comparable engine size: if you need new pipes off the engine, instead of a single pipe as on an inline 4 or 6, there are two header type pipes due to the design of horizontally opposed (boxer) engines.
it only helps if you're anemic- if you don't have enough iron in your blood.
