I have a Bryant furnace (in my condo) that is about 30 years old. The hvac guy who does my AC told me (before looking) that the heat exchanger is probably rusted out and that they don't make them any more. I had him over for a clean and check and he showed me a mound of accumulated rust under the heat exchanger when he opened it. He said pushing the brush in to clean it would probably poke a hole in the heat exchanger and recommended a new furnace. Coincidentally, he is running a special on Goodman GMT GDS80453AX furnaces for 1750.00 installed with a 10 year labor warranty. Is this guy just trying to make a buck off me or should I believe him?
He is probably telling you the truth. However, buy a brand name furnace or maybe a heat pump that will do the ac and heat. Not sure that I would only go with the guy who came out, I would get a few quotes, a little competition never hurt anyone. At 30 years you got your moneys worth.
Get prices on a new system an average furnace heat exchanger lasts around 20 years before they start to break down and rust. Goodman is a ok brand but if you want the bang for your buck look at getting a trane, american standard, carrier, or lennox. they all have better warrantys and are better systems. i clean furnaces all day long and if i was in his shoes i would have showed you the same thing. also ask the dealer is his furnace qualifies for the tax credit i bet it doesnt.
Rust accumulation is common. The real test is to inspect the heat exchanger - they're usually thick enough to survive rust flaking for many years, but of course it depends on how thick they are in that make and model. If you decide to not install a new unit, you absolutely should install a CO (carbon monoxide) detector somewhere in the living space of your house. If the HE does develop a hole, that would result in CO being put into the air stream and that can be dangerous or even fatal.
yes, it would be almost a must to replace a 30 year old furnace. and yes, the heat exchanger being rusty is a serious condition that can fill your living quarters with carbon monoxide gas. I own rental property and change furnaces at 20 years even if they are working.
Alpine home air products website. The price for their Goodman GDS80453AX Gas Furnace is $693.99 .So your guy is charging you $1000.00 so install your new furnace.Sounds a little steep to me being that all of the duct work is already there. All he has to do is pull the old furnace out and hook your new one up to the old duct work.
