Your question seems incomplete. If you want to shut your smoke alarm off temporally, newer homes have a circuit breaker for the smoke alarms. Otherwise, the covers pop off, just be gentile. Then you disconnect the plug that is inside, and you remove the unit to a clean dry place until you return it to the ceiling. If it is battery operated, remove the battery and recycle it. Then when ready to replace the unit, purchase a new battery and install it. Then return the unit to the ceiling.

I am pretty sure that it is a state law. My church now has to go under construction because it does not have a sprinkler system or a fire alarm. If it is a public building, then yes you have to have one. You can check with your local fire department, they would know the laws.
