WIth the new ' bring your own bag' policy we need plastic bags we would have to pay 10cents... comments...
If we have to pay 10cents then will buy a cloth bag
This is nothing new in other countries like Taiwan they don't give you any plastic bag when you buy thing from them. If you need, they charge you NT$20. Singapore say is to safe the enivronment, but actually is to safe cost for them supermarket. Imaging if you buy one whole week marketing how to bring your own plastic / cloth bag? I think needed to bring a tour bag for it next time. Ha Ha Ha.
The aims are noble. I mean who can fault them for wanting to protect the environment. I agree with owenrich that in a sense, we are lagging behind many other countries in this regard. For non regular shoppers like me who do not have a habit of carrying shopping bags wherever we go, we would not mind paying for the bags. What irked me however is having to fork out money to advertise their company. Bags have been traditionally a marketing tool for department stores and supermarkets. During festive seasons like Christmas, shoppers are known to patronize stores that have beautiful shopping bags created specially for the seasons. To the stores, the publicity they get far outweighs the cost of the bags. It is not a Christmas season now, and the bags you see are their normal dull looking bags with nothing but the stores' logos and slogans all over. What more, we are now paying to publicize their stores. Doesn't that seem somewhat ridiculous? If it is just environment issues that they are concerned with, they should give shoppers a choice to purchase eco-friendly bags which do not bear their company names at all. Otherwise, they will have the last laugh at the expense of consumer dollars.
Why not we look at things in another angle. Put aside government and cost cutting issues. Lets look at how harmful plastic bag is, to the environment, the place we live, the air we breath and the water we drink. Most people is aware that toxic gas and tiny particle may be given out when mfg plastic product, also while burning plastic rubbish. When it rains, it flow into drain, river, reservoirs etc. Take note that we are drinking a small % of recycled water. Think further, I am sure that there are more harm than what I had mentioned. If anyone think it is unfair or too lazy to bring your own bags, just don't go shopping on that day every month. Go home early, spend some time with your family. Isn't that better?
