Answer:

There is no 'one standard' - there are many different kinds of pallets, often custom sized to the product being shipped on them. Just to toss out a couple of extremes - a grocery chain may use one size of pallet, and a furniture store another. They could be anywhere from 3ft x 5ft, 4ft square, to 4ft x 12ft (like what you'd find under drywall, or plywood at a building supplier). You can often get free pallets from a lumber yard/building supply store - tho, these are often damaged, and of random sizes. Grocery stores, and department stores often use a plastic type of pallet, and whether plastic, or wood, they are often shipped back to their warehouse, or whole sale location. But you might be able to get one or two, if you ask nicely. I live in a rural area where there are many lumber mills, and quite a few pallet manufacturers - so I see flat bed semi-trucks going down the highway all the time, with lots of different size pallets - its just whatever the customer needs. Good Luck
Thank you TSW - the only one who remembers an empty pallet has a height too!
There are architectural standards, but they are only generally accepted guidelines, and for average sized people. I have several pages of tables of them. Highlights: dining side chairs : 18-21 w 16-20 d 17-18.5 t (to seat) 30-36 t (back) countertop chairs : +- 24 h to seat barstools <30 h to seat (footrest 20 below seat) Tables and desks : 29-31 from floor, apron at least 24 from floor Beds are all over the place in height with some of the new pillow-top mattresses. But again there are general length and width guidelines for twin, XL twin, full, queen, king and their variants. and so on.
