A paint store near me always has wood pallets. They're an odd size, though - considerably less than the usual 44 x 48. But since they only go around one time, they're always in good shape. You could try a paint store. Getting them for free isn't terribly likely. Pallets cost anywhere from $5-25 each depending on where they're purchased and in what condition, and even in rough shape they can still perform useful duty; many places don't like to give them away unless they're really battered beyond use or repair. Lots of places sell pallets. Get in the Yellow Pages and look up Material Handling, you may find some listings for pallet dealers and resellers.
