Question:

supporting a 3.1 liter engine without the hoist the manufacturer tells you to buy while changing heads?

I am changing heads in a 95 buick skylark and the book says I need to support the engine with a hoist type lift and adapter. Is there another way to support this from the bottom without hurting the oil pan or something else.I loosened the dog bone and the motor does fall down and needs support. This has put the project at a standstill for the moment. Thanks

Answer:

There is ALWAYS a way, BUT the manufacturer usually has the BEST way figured out on a cost versus time basis.
a standard flor jack should be able to hold it up with out damaging it but put an old towel in between just in case

You can use a hydraulic floor jack with a block of wood. Place the block of wood on the saddle of the jack and under the crankshaft pulley. Use caution when doing this. You're not trying to jack the engine through the hood, you're merely using the jack to support the weight of the engine.
