Question:

the sun is 25 degress above the horizon. find the length of a shadow cast by a silo that is 50 feet tall.?

pre-cal question

Answer:

So... basically you have a right angled (90 degree) triangle. There is the side of length (s) that is shadow along the ground, there is the side of length 50 at 90 degrees to the ground and the other side (the hypotenuse) of unknown length (from the top of the silo to the top of the shadow), but at 25 degrees from the silo. Using basic trigonometry: tan(angle) = length opposite / length adjacent tan(25) = s / 50 s = 50*tan(25) In this case, s is approximately 23.3 ft
