Question:

The turn signals on my 1996 GMC Sonoma have stopped working. What should I do about it?

I replaced the fuse, but all that happens is the directional arrow comes on and just stays there. It was flashing furiously. Now it just stays solidly lit. Any ideas?

Answer:

Replace the bulbs and that should work. this is fairly easy to do depending on the car and your locla kragen or auto shop can help you or give you some advise about it. If this does not work you may very well have an delectrical problem or a back light socket. And if all else fails change your blinker fluid!!! J/K
You may just have some burned out directional bulb(s). That's what happened on my car.
What you are experiencing is a shorted multifunction switch. I am assuming all of your light bulbs are working properly. If the bulbs are not all working, fix this first and recheck. If you still have a solid arrow or it flashes like ten bear, you will have to replace the switch and harness inside the steering column. Good luck.
Remove all turn signal marker and stop light bulbs out and spray CRC 56 in the sockets and replace the bulbs. If you have silicone grease cover the terminal wires on the bulb replace every thing and everything should work fine. It's a crappy job but for some reason the metal inside of the light sockets discolor and turns green. Resistance builds up and If it will make you feel better I've been down that same road with a 98 S-10 with 26,500 miles on it. Its always been stored and never driven in the winter. We've forgotten how to make good quality copper
If the turn signals have stopped working on only one side, then it's the rear bulb that has stopped working. If neither side is flasing, there's something called a Flasher. It's typically in the area where your fuses are located and regulates the flashing of your turn signal and emergency lights flashing. It's typically cylinderical in shape and about 1inch in diameter. If your unsure, go to a parts store they should be able to help you out. Replace that component.
