Question:

Tile On Countertops & Floors?

Would it be awkward to have tile on both the floor & counter top? We have white cabinets, stainless steel appliances & I want medium brown floors & counter tops...would this be weird?

Answer:

Don't tile your countertops- you will regret it! The grout is hard to clean, not to mention unsanitary. Do yourself a favor and opt for some sort of solid surface- corian, granite, or quartz. If that is not in your budget there are really nice laminates out there. But, matching your countertops and flooring color-wise is a good decision.
It's true that solid surface would be best; however, you can use a granite tile at a much lower cost than a slab. Use dark grout and seal it properly to avoid the problems the other person mentioned. As far as color is concerned; I think I might want the floor a little lighter than the counter tops - to make them pop. Same color family, just slightly different tones or textures. Also, if you don't have a lot of counters, you can ask for a discounted granite slab; most granite places have leftovers. Make sure you have some warm color lighting or accessories to spice up your look; like oranges or reds.
Not weird at all, its all in the look you like. They make many tiles called modular tiles that come both in 2 sizes , a big tile and a smaller tile. For example a 12x12 and a 6x6 tile, These work for a floor / wall combination just as your doing.Or you can do a solid surface counter top and a smaller tile on the back splash to go with the floor tile. You don t have to do it that way but they should obviously compliment each other. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
