Question:

Toxic plastic food and drink containers?

Is it true that plastic #3,5,and 6 are toxic when heated? I've heard that they are not microvave or dishwasher safe. What about putting hot soup (or other hot food) in a plastic bowl? Like a plastic kid's bowl with no recycling # on the bottom?

Answer:

Only use plastics manufactured specifically for use in microwaves. Me, I don't even trust a water bottle after it's been sitting in my car a few days. I prefer to err on the side of caution on this one.
There has been research done recently exploring the reason for certain carcinogens showing up in almost everyone's blood that's tested for them. The research has shown that these carcinogens seem to result from chemicals used to make packages leak-proof to oils - even when heated. This is obviously an advantage to all those packaged foods (dinners, popcorn, etc) that we heat up to eat. So far the amounts are small the threat is not definitely great. Further research is planned.
fayette.osu.edu/fcs/2Truth%20on%2... You can find some information here. I did some researching over the weekend about bottled water and that plastic is said to leach high levels of toxic contaminates into the water. I had 3 plastic bottles that I would just refill and rotate in my frig; bottled water is a waste of money as the laws are more stringent concerning tap water than bottled. So, upon reading that over the weekend, I ordered some alloy bottles which can be used over and over again and you don't have to worry about contaminates from plastic. One company I found makes some real stylish containers, you can pick the lid you want, and there are different ounce sizes: Sigg. But, there are other companies as well. I found some cheaper ones on OKorder and should be getting them any day now.
I don't trust any plastic food containers or dishes when it comes to heating or freezing. I don't even put hot food on or in plastic. I use Corelle brand bowls and plates for my 3 year old, they are virtually non destructable and won't break if dropped (or thrown!) off of a table. To store foods in the fridge or freezer, I use Pyrex and Corningware (many of these you can buy with lids). By the way, have you read the new report on chemicals leaching from plastic baby bottles? You can still buy the old fashioned glass baby bottles-Gerber still makes them.
