Question:

Transmission fluid and filter change or no?

What are everyones opinions on a transmission fluid and filter change? I think my last one caused my tranny to go and i‘m getting another transmission and I am wondering wether I should change the fluid in that or not. Just what is your opinion on them?

Answer:

Any car or truck which has an unsealed transmission should be drained and filter changed no later then 100,000 miles. Filters and transmission fluid is inexpensive compared to a transmission failure. I can't imagine who told you what your heard about slippage with fresh fluid a a clean filter cause it just ain't' so. Call any Buick, Pontiac or Chevrolet dealer and ask what GM's recommended transmission fluid and filter change interval should be.
Transmission fluid is always recommended at every 30,000 miles. Changing old fluid and filter with clean ones will not cause damage to the transmission, unless the wrong fluid or filter is used. Some types of fluid are meant to help create friction, while others are meant to lubricate to reduce friction. If a transmission is made to have a friction fluid, but receives a non-friction fluid then you would have a problem. I recommend regular maintenance with the right stuff.
The only way a transmission fluid and filter change could have ruined your last transmission is if someone botched it. Have someone more competent do it to your new (I'm assuming actually used) transmission.
