Question:

Transmission fluid flush on 2006 corolla?

I took my 2006 corolla (46,000 miles) into a Midas shop for mild vibrations on the steering wheel at speeds above 60mph. They looked at tire balance and saw they were only off by a quarter. They didn‘t find anything else. However, they recommended that I need to do transmission fluid flush as it‘s past the 30,000 miles mark recommended by Toyota. I asked him if it was necessary and he said if it‘s my car, I would do it I searched online and people have different opinions on when to flush it if at all. Any advice on whether I should do it or not? Also, would transmission fluid have anything to do with the mild vibrations on the steering wheel?

Answer:

For sure the transmission fluid hasn't got anything to do with the mild vibrations you're feeling in the steering wheel but the air pressure the wheels being properly balanced can cause such things or something loose in the steering or a faulty tire belt etc. The only thing I'd say really about the flushing of the transmission is if it's a factory warranty requirement then get it done but I recommend since the dealership can in the future deny etc any type of warranty coverage or work due to the transmission flush not being done by a dealership , go to a dealership you like and have them do it that way they have to stand behind their warranty and workmanship etc. Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if you've not tried rotating the tires yet do that but be sure the tire pressures and wheels are fully balanced and have the front end checked beforehand.

They recommend transmission flushing- it is in the toyota maintenance schedule. I have never seen transmission fluid go bad in a transmission that is not already broken down. My feeling is that first there is mechanical misfortune, then there is symptom of it in the fluid. It seems more to me like insurance that you pay year after year and nothing happens, but you still were protected, just in case. The vibration is not and cannot be caused by old transmission fluid. It's more likely wheels being out of alignment, but sometimes a bad CV joint can cause that same kind of vibration. You get alignment, new tires, and the vibration still happens and that only leaves the CV joints to suspect. My '98 Corolla is waaaay out of warranty. I have the same transmission fluid that has been in it for 70,000 miles. Maybe I'll change the fluid and filter on a good Saturday. Flushing does little more than that, but it does add $200 to the bill. My ATF still looks and smells good.
