Question:

Transmission flush - For a standard?

I just recently purchased a 2005 Ford Focus in January and it has 58k on it. The only thing I am worried about is the transmission. Should I get it flushed if it has not been done before? Can you get a transmission maintenance done on a stick-shift? Since it is almost 60k miles on the car, its it a risk at the transmission not working anymore?

Answer:

Standard. Avoid power flushing. Too many iffs can happen. They don't really remove the metal bits on the bottom of the pan do they. Just stirs it up and clogs the filter that they won't change either.
No flush, just drain and refill.
Standard transmissions are pretty easy to service. On the lower side, you should find a drain plug. On the higher side, you should find the filler plug. Crack open the filler plug first, then do the drain plug. Let it drain completely, just like you would when changing the motor oil. Put the drain plug back in, then fill the transmission. Most use standard 90 weight gear oil. Once it is filled, put the fill plug back in. With 58,000 miles in this vehicle, I would recommend changing the gear oil in it. You have no idea how old or abused the old oil is, and you can breath easier with new gear oil. The rear end works in essentially the same way, with drain and fill plugs. If you are going to change the transmission oil, I would do the rear end as well. It takes the same kind of oil, and you should rest easy with both of these procedures done.
